Benghazi, 25 May 2016:

One of four shells fired from militant positions that slammed into Benghazi today forced the postponement of . . .[restrict]a graduation ceremony for medical students. Though one person was injured in all the attacks, there were no deaths and damage was not substantial.

The graduation ceremony for pharmacology students at the Benghazi Medical School in Belaoun was abandoned after a round struck near the building.  The nearby Benghazi Medical Centre also appeared to be targeted last week when a mortar round or rocket landed at a busy road junction close by killing three and wounding nine.

Two further rockets or mortar exploded today in Sidi Abaid and a fourth struck an abandoned house in Hawari.  It is understood that at least one of the missiles was fired from Sabri where militants continue to hold out despite being virtually surrounded by the army since the end of last year.

It also appears that the army’s hold on Gwarsha is no longer as firm as it claimed last month when terrorist resistance seemed to collapse in the face of its “Blood of the Martyrs” assault. At the time, army sources said that the main enemy force had fallen back to the tourist village and its tiny harbour at Ganfouda. Gwarsha required only a cleaning up operation.

The situation would seem to have changed. There has been heavy fighting in Gwarsha today between the army and members of the Benghazi Revolutionaries’ Shoura Council. Militant positions were bombed in at least one pass by an airforce jet. [/restrict]
