Tripoli, 14 February 2016:

Italy has responded to the call by the . . .[restrict]refugee agency, the UNHCR,  for emergency humanitarian aid for Libya’s estimated 2.4 million internal refugees. It has given $1.5 million for a range of specific targets chosen by the Rome government.

Some $500,000 is to be used by the UNHCR to organise the distribution of aid, including the registration of those who entitled to it. This work is being done by the International Committee of the Red Cross in close partnership with the local Red Crescent. These organisations are also providing vulnerable groups with access to basic services, financial help and psychological assistance.

Another tranche of the Italian funding is to continue the current monitoring of detention centres run in Libya by the Department for Combatting Illegal Migration. Some of the money is also to be devoted to monitoring the migrant rescue efforts of the Libyan Coastguard.

It is unclear how much of the cash will also go on the provision of food and other aid. The World Food Programme had to suspend aid deliveries for the last two months of last year because it ran out of money. This year planning to deliver $27 million of aid to internally displaced Libyans, but has still not raised the full sum. [/restrict]
