Tunis, 28 January 2016:

Following his visit to Uganda, the head of the government appointed by the continuing General . . .[restrict]National Congress, Khalifa Ghwell, has arrived in South Africa where he has been welcomed by South African President Jacob Zuma.

In their meeting, at which Ghwell expressed his pleasure at being able to explain the Libyan situation to the South Africans, he urged them to support the Libya-Libya Dialogue (as opposed to the UN-led process) . This, he claimed, should have African Union backing and would result in a national unity government that would be supported by all people in Libya.

The same message was given to Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni in a bid to garner AU for the Tripoli regime ahead of the AU summit in Addis Ababa on Saturday and Sunday – to which the Tripoli regime has not been invited.

According to Ghwell’s office, the South Africans expressed their gratitude for the Libya visit, saying that it was the first time since the revolution that they had been properly informed what was going on in Libya, and that they would back the Libya-Libya Dialogue at the AU.

However, according to a South African presidency statement, the meeting was at Ghwell’s request. He asked “Zuma to engage the upcoming African Union Summit with a view to have the AU playing a leading role in the resolution of the Libyan crisis”.

For his part, Zuma urged the Libyan people and its leaders “to set aside their differences and unite to put the country on a path of peace‚ unity and prosperity‚” the South African statement said. [/restrict]
