UPDATE: US Abu Nabil air strike in Derna not Sirte: report

Tripoli, 14 November 2015:

It now appears that the US airstrike last night targeting Islamic State (IS) terror leader . . .[restrict]Abu Nabil Al-Anbari was at Derna rather than Sirte as previously reported.  Normally reliable social media exchanges have quoted a Pentagon spokesman as saying the attack was “near Derna” – almost certainly the Fataieh district south east of the town where IS are still based.

The attack came as the US and its allies also launched as many as 27 strikes against IS targets in Iraq and Syria.  The strikes were the same day as the IS attacks in Paris which killed 129 people, but was planned and authorised beforehand,, the spokesman said.

However, for the past ten days there have been reports from both Sirte and Tripol that US drones and spy planes have been orbiting above them for long periods. It is also being said that IS fighters today conducted high-profile raids on five houses in Sirte, for reasons which are not yet clear.

Meanwhile, a Libyan army source has said that the airforce also launched a series of raids in Derna early today. He said that the air strikes targeted the Fataieh district south east of the town.

It is being claimed that the Libyan warplanes attacked outbuildings on the Derna campus of the Beida-based Omar Mukhtar university which were allegedly storing ammunition. An air attack was also launched against an IS convoy moving down a valley near the town.

No details were given of the effectiveness of the strikes. [/restrict]
