Tripoli, 11 November 2015:
The powers in Tripoli say they have arrested an Emirati soldier, accusing him of being . . .[restrict]a spy. They claim that evidence of Yousef Mubarak’s guilt was found from papers in his possession and after checking his computer.
The claim comes against the background of anger in Tripoli against the UAE following the news that outgoing UN Special Envoy Bernardino Leon has been appointed head of the UAE’s diplomatic academy. Leon was widely seen beforehand to have favoured the Tripoli-based General National Congress in attempts to mediate a peace between it and the Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HoR).
His new job and the leaked contents of a hacked email from him to the UAE’s foreign minister have resulted in accusations that he was less than impartial.
The UAE has been a strong supporter of the HoR.
It is said that Mubarak is now being investigated. He was uncovered by the intelligence services, according to Sadiq Al-Sour, head of the Public Prosecutor’s office.
“He is still under investigation by the public prosecution after all information from his laptop and documents has shown that Mubarak was spying for a foreign country,” Sour has been quoted by Reuters as saying.
There was no explanation as to why he was discovered just when the UAE is in the news, accused of colluding with Leon. [/restrict]
