Crime wave in Sebha continues

Tripoli/Ghat, 2 July 2015:

Four people are reported to have been shot dead in the past 48 . . .[restrict]hours in Sebha’s Gardah district. None of the killings appear to be connected, nor in this case were they related to the plague of car jackings which in recent weeks has seen a number of drivers murdered for their vehicles.

In a separate incident yesterday, arguments between drivers queuing up at a petrol station quickly degenerated into a gunfight which ended up with the station on fire and a number of people being taken to hospital for minor burns.

The unending cycle of violence in the town, ostensibly still under the control of Misrata’s Third Force, is reported to have prompted Tripoli’s controversial militia leader Abdul Ghani Kikli, otherwise known as Ghnaiwa, to say that he was prepared to go to Sebha to impose law and order there.

His appearance would almost certainly not be appreciated. He is a member of the new militant Samoud alliance set up by Salah Badi supposedly to protect Tripoli from the LNA but which is firmly opposed to the UN-brokered Dialogue in Skhirat, Morocco.

Sebha Municipal Council has come out firmly in favour of it, and not just it, but of the proposal in the latest draft to the Dialogue process that the proposed Supreme Council for Local Administration be located in the town. In a statement this week, it welcomed the idea.

It also called on all parties in the country to stop putting their own interests first, instead make concessions for the greater good of Libya, for all internally and externally displaced people to be allwed to return home, and for national reconciliation – notions that the Samoud alliance and Ghnaiwa would not probably want to endorse.
