Kufra airport has been been closed because of lack of security as well as a . . .[restrict]shortage of fuel and of supplies say the airport staff. The closure they insist is only temporary.
The airport, which has been occupied by pro-government forces, came under attack this week in an ugly incident which the municipal council insisted was the work of drunks. Two days ago a pro-government radio station in the town was trashed by unidentified attackers.
Before the countrywide collapse in security last summer, the airport had been in the midst of an upgrade being carried out by Turkish and South Korean contractors. That work stopped when the foreign nationals were evacuated.
It is unclear if the airport closure will affect the arrival of Korean doctors who LANA reported have been hired to work in the town’s hospital on four year contracts. The first of up to 20 doctors is understood to have flown in this week. At least ten more of his colleagues were expected in the coming days.
The Korean specialists, backed up by a Bangladeshi nursing team include surgeons and gynaecologists. They are expected to work in the town’s hospital, from which other foreign medical professionals have fled since the Libya Dawn occupation of Tripoli and increasing violence in Kufra itself.
