Benghazi, 6 February 2015:

The authorities in Benghazi say they have uncovered a sizable corrupt food trading operation on Tuesday, seizing . . .[restrict]more than 50 tons of frozen contaminated fish and other expired foods from a storehouse in the Giuliana area near the fish market.

The food, presumably on its way to be sold in Benghazi by traders taking advantage of the desperate situation in the city, had spoilt because it had not been stored properly.

Despite the ongoing clashes, the Municipal Police, in cooperation with the Criminal Investigation Unit and the Environmental Sanitation Bureau, located and arrested the fish traders and made further arrests after raiding a farm, where they discovered a group of illegal immigrants selling live chickens.

Authorities have also recently seized large amounts of flour from a group of traders said to be making large profits on the black market, buying government-subsidised flour from bakers and then selling it on. In response, the government has threatened to revoke the license of any bakery that is caught re-selling government-issued flour. [/restrict]
