HoR sacks ambassadors to Turkey and Jordan

Tripoli, 11 September 2014:

The House of Representatives (HoR) has dismissed Libya’s ambassadors to Turkey and Jordan and has called . . .[restrict]seven others for questioning to Tobruk, including those to Sudan, Kuwait, Belarus and Serbia.

With some question as to the loyalty of the diplomats to the HoR and its established government, it appears that it is cleaning house.

Ambassador to Jordan Mohamed Agheirani has accepted an appointment as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of Omar Al-Hassi and was sworn in by Saleh Al-Makhzoum, the deputy president of the rump Congress on 6 September.

In response, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Abdulaziz has withdrawn Agheriani from his post in Jordan and stripped him of his diplomatic immunity.

Libya’s Ambassador to Turkey Abdulrazak Almokhtar earlier this week denied rumours of his recall by the HoR earlier  in protest comments made by Turkish President Recep Erdogan suggesting that Turkey could not accept the Libyan legislature’s meeting in Tobruk. However, the ambassador was recalled yesterday because of his alleged allegiance to Hassi’s “government”.

The HoR is reported to have also summonsed the Libyan ambassador to Cairo, Mohamed Fayez Abdul-Aziz Jibril, for questioning – not because of doubts about his loyalty but to hear from him firsthand the situation of the many thousands of Libyans stranded in Egypt. [/restrict]
