Benghazi, 7 May:
Four bank guards were murdered when a vehicle they were travelling in was attacked en route from Benghazi to . . .[restrict]Tobruk on Sunday. Three million dinars was stolen.
Details of the attack are sketchy and confusing at present. According to sources in the prosecutors’ office in Benghazi, the vehicle carrying the money was an ordinary car. It was supposed to have taken the direct route via Bayda and Derna but instead took the desert road from Ajdabiya to Tobruk. However, one interior ministry source claimed that it had taken place at at Karsa some 20 kilomteres on the road to Derna. Initially, it was reported that LD 5 million have been stolen.
Wanis Al-Sharif, the deputy interior minister responsible for eastern Libya, was quoted as saying that all four had had their throats slit.
