Tripoli, 18 June 2014:

Despite the continuing insecurity,  the Libyan arts scene is still developing and growing. Through the Libyan . . .[restrict]Street Theatre Project, the result of a partnership between the British Council in Libya, the Libyan National Theatre and the European Union, the profile of street theatre in Libya is on the rise and public access to the arts is increasing.

Through the project, young Libyan theatre students have been given the chance to work with an established British outdoor theatre director and have now been invited to perform for the public in the UK.

“It was a humbling experience to see the hunger and desire for story-telling and a community experience in Libya,” said GDIF Associate Director, Nathan Curry.

According to the British Council, a troupe of actors and a musician has been invited to take part in the Greenwich + Docklands International Festival (GDIF) 2014,  between 25-26 June. This is billed as London’s “largest and most-established festival of free outdoor theatre and performing arts”.

While in London, the actors will spend time working with the UK outdoor theatre company, Periplum, to create a new performance especially for the festival.

Some of the theatre students are experienced performers but street theatre is a new artistic experience for them all.

According to the supporting musician, Fuad Gritli, “The Libyan troupe members are very different in terms of background and age and that’s what’s is going to make what they perform in London so  interesting”. [/restrict]
