Tripoli, 14 June 2014:
GECOL has appealed for a break in military action in Benghazi so its engineers can make . . .[restrict]critical repairs in three districts which have lost power. It has warned that there is a chance that these local outages could trigger widespread power failures elsewhere.
“These cuts to power lines might have a dangerous effect on the national grid,” the Director of Electricity Distribution In Sahel Benghazi, Sala Al-Abar told the Libya Herald, “ and this may cause shortages or cause station to drop out of the network”.
He explained:“We made an appeal through our Facebook page calling for a halt to military operations so we could fix the damaged power lines” ,
The most harm to infrastructure, including substations, has been caused in the Sidi Faraj, Al-Hawari and Al-Guwarsha districts.
“We managed to fix a few lines and electricity cabinets in the area,” explained Abar, but added that it had been too dangerous for GECOL engineers to do very much of the essential repair work .
He said that the Al-Guwarsha district contains large farms and cattle sheds. The animals could not be watered because power was cut off to pumps. They were also having to ensure the sound of regular artillery firing.
