Italy-based shipping company Med Cross Lines has added a new ship to its fleet, increasing . . .[restrict]the frequency of the company’s visits to Libyan ports to every 14 days.
Now three ships strong, Med Cross delivers from Sagunto (Spain), Marseille, Livorno, Piraeus, Derince, Izmir, Mersin and Beirut though its hub in Piraeus and from the Italian ports of Venice, Koper, Bari and Augusta to ports in Benghazi, Misrata, and Tripoli, with deliveries to other Libyan ports upon special request.
The shipping line is devoted mostly to RO-RO cargo, which includes heavy vehicles, trucks, and trailers. Given that Libya’s top imports after non-crude oil are cars, trucks, machinery and aircraft — much of which comes from Europe— Med Cross has become an important link between the Libyan and European markets.
According to company CEO Loris Trevisan, Med Cross carried about 5,800 cargo units and 3,000 containers for a total revenue of about $9.5 million in 2013.
When asked how much growth the company expects for next year, Trevisan told the Libya Herald: “With the addition of the third vessel we expect to increase our volume by about 30 percent and to reach a total revenue of about $18 million in 2014.” [/restrict]
