Tripoli, 4 May 2014:

The General National Congress (GNC ) was . . .[restrict]unable to agree on a new Prime Minister in its final voting session this lunchtime.

After failing to get an outright winner in this morning’s session between Ahmed Maetig (73 votes) and Omar Sulaiman Al-Hassi (43 votes), with 36 spoilt voting papers , the GNC then moved to a vote of confidence in Ahmed Maetiq.

However, Maetig could only obtain 113 votes of confidence, leaving him just 7 votes short of the necessary 120 votes needed to make him Prime Minister.

There were many votes of no confidence in the Prime Minister and a number of GNC members were not present to vote.

There was much commotion at the end of the vote with a number of vocal GNC members wanting a revote and others saying that 113 votes should be adequate to elect the new Prime Minister.

However, the GNC acting leader ended the voting session and attempted to move on to the next items on the agenda: A vote of no-confidence in GNC head Nuri Abusahmain and on the 2014 budget.

The GNC will have to set another day for another vote on the new Prime Minister.

Television transmission was ended when the GNC members became very roudy.
