Tripoli, 30 March 2014:

The gas supply from the Wafa field to the Mellitah complex  in Zuwara has now been . . .[restrict]stopped completely, after the flow was reduced last week by protestors turning down the taps.

Zintani members of  the Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG) stationed at the Wafa gas fields have have confirmed yesterday’s reports that they are blocking the gas pipeline near Derj, some 60 kilometres east of Ghadames. They say are protesting against extension of the General National Congress (GNC) beyond its original mandate which they claim expired on 7 February.

“We are blockading the gas pipeline and we will unblock it only when the GNC ceases to exist,” Derj PFG Commander, Ibrahim Al-Duweeb, told the Libya Herald.

“The GNC is overwhelmed with, and led by, the Muslim Brotherhood,” he said. “It is jeopardising our national unity, corrupting our national economy and inciting civil war amongst Libyans.”

The gas pipeline blockade is the latest protest in a series of protests against the GNC.

The Wafa gas fields, operated by Mellitah OIl and Gas, a joint venture between the National Oil Corporation and Italy’s Eni,  are guarded mainly by Zintani and Tebu members of the PFG. Two thirds of the gas normally produced goes through the Greenstream pipeline to Italy. [/restrict]
