Tripoli, 26 February 2014:

Revolution anniversary celebrations continued in Tripoli last night, with local residents from various districts in . . .[restrict]the capital marching from Tajoura to Martyrs’ Square to remember the day when people from that area joined the revolution.

On 25 February 2011, people from Tajoura, Fashloom, Souq Al-Juma and Dahra gathered in Martyrs’ Square, then called Green Square, to protest against Muammar Qaddafi’s response to the initial uprising against his rule, and to show their commitment to the revolution.

The move was seen as particularly brave because five days earlier many people staging a similar protest had been killed by Qaddafi’s troops. Rather than terrify people into submission, the incident sparked an angry response, with residents from Tajoura, Fashloom, Souq Al-Juma and Dahra arranging a second demonstration.

Qaddafi troops again fired live rounds into the protest and many of the demonstrators were killed.

The day is marked every year by local people and yesterday’s march attracted families, children and the elderly. Some, wearing 25 February T-shirts, were on foot, families hung out of cars waving flags, while others rode bicycles, motorbikes and three people were even on horseback.
