LROR and revolutionary groups pledge support for Congress

Tripoli, 5 February 2014:

The Libyan Revolutionaries’ Operation Room (LROR) and a number of other revolutionary groups from around the . . .[restrict]country have submitted statements pledging their support to the General National Congress (GNC).

The statements are a response to popular movements that have gained momentum in several Libyan cities demanding the removal of Congress by 7 February. There are widespread concerns that some militants may use force to achieve that end.

The spokesman for the GNC, Omar Hemidan, told the Libya Herald that its President, Nuri Abu Sahmain, had recently received letters from local and military councils across Libya confirming their support for Congress.

Head of the LROR’s political office, Adel Gharyani, told this paper that representatives from revolutionary groups had held a meeting on Monday in Mislata to review the situation in Libya and find a solution for the current security crisis.

Gharyani said that the meeting resulted in a number of agreements, the first of which being to protect the GNC. He added, however, that the LROR wished to see a new independent government and a Congress comprised of members with no allegiance to political parties. They would however  be expected to be supported and endorsed by the revolutionary groups.

Gharyani said that Tripoli, as the seat of government, especially needed to be secure and that the Political Isolation Law needed to be protected as one of the gains of the revolution.

In a separate incident highlighting the fragility of security around Congress, the commander of the Qaqaa Brigade, Othman Milaiqtah, yesterday let off a round of gunfire in front of the GNC building when, according to Hemaidan, he arrived unplanned to meet Abu Sahmain and was told that he would have to wait until the president had finished his current meeting.

It is understood that Milaiqtah later left the GNC without holding any meetings.
