Tripoli, 12 December 2013:

The Prime Minister has firmly denied reports that the government will cut ties with Egypt saying . . .[restrict]that relations between the two countries are stronger than ever.

There had been social media claims that the authorities had asked the Egyptian diplomatic mission in Tripoli to leave the county in the aftermath of the acquittal of Ahmed Qaddaf Al-Dam in Egypt. The former leading aide and cousin to Qaddafi is wanted in Libya to face a range of charges. His extradition from Egypt is still pending.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Zeidan dismissed the rumours out of hand, saying: “Libya would not cut off its relationship with Egypt, under any circumstances. Egypt is a neighbour and we are bound by the bonds of brotherhood.”

Zeidan added, referring to the case of Qaddaf Al-Dam, that the issue was one for Egyptians to resolve themselves just as Libyans would not accept interference in their internal affairs.

The Libya ambassador to Egypt, Mohammed Fayez Jibril, has said in Cairo that the acquittal of Qadaff Al-Dam did not mean he was innocent of crimes committed in Libya. Jibril said that putting the former Qadaffi aid on trial in Libya was “the fundamental right of the Libyan people “. [/restrict]
