The Libyan Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr Naim Gharyani, met with American Ambassador Gene Cretz in Tripoli on Wednesday . . .[restrict]to discuss the problems facing Libyan students getting US visas. They also discussed the cooperation in fields of higher education and scientific research. The meeting was also attended by the Research Science Affairs Undersecretary, Dr Ibrahim Saleh and the Undersecretary of Higher Education Dr. Fathi Akkari.
At the moment, Libyans wanting to go the the US have to go to the American embassy either Tunis or Cairo to apply for a visa. That is not seen as practical.
The ministry sends hundreds of Libyan students to America every year.
Dr Ibrahim Saleh stated that both sides agreed to set up a working group to set a basis for continued cooperation and sort out the difficulties that could hinder future cooperation in the fields of higher education and scientific research. The team will consist of members of the US Embassy and members of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
Discissions also touched upon the visit made by Prime Minister Abdurrahim Al-Kib to America last month during which a working group to establish the foundations for continued cooperation in the fields of higher education and scientific research was formed.
Saleh reported the US ambassador saying that relations with Libya in the fields of higher education and scientific research had altered as a result of the Libyan Prime Minister’s visit to the US.
He stressed that with this, relations with the US had been reactivated, be it in respect of study costs, residency and visas as well as the lifting of some restrictions — restrictions which Libya has been shackled with in the past, such as nuclear research and aviation.
