Tripoli, 20 October 2013:
Security forces in the south of the country this morning foiled an attempted armed robbery on a car . . .[restrict]carrying nearly LD 3 million in cash.
The armed gang tried to intercept the vehicle on the main road between the two southern towns of Sebha and Obari, according to Libyan news agency LANA. The attack was foiled, however, by members of Obari’s Battalion 206, who were alerted to the attack by other security personnel employed to protect the car-load of cash.
Two members of the battalion, which works under the Libyan Army, were injured in an exchange of gunfire. The attackers then fled the scene.
The money, which was being taken to a bank in Obari as part of a private transaction, was being carried in a civilian vehicle.
An investigation has been launched and security forces are now looking for the attackers. [/restrict]
