The actual contract for the project was signed back in 2010.

The contract is for the re-building of the airport’s main runway, the parallel driveway and the side driveways as well as the aircraft taxiing area and the airport’s lighting system.

Bruno Alberto Salis, Salini’s Libyan Branch Manager, signed the contract on behalf of the Italian company .

Salini stated that it will start work at the airport by the end of August 2013, and that the work is expected to be completed within twenty months.

The signing ceremony was attended by representative from the Transportation Projects Implementation Authority, Mr. Ezzeldine Abu-Rawi Giwa, the security attaché of the Italian Embassy and the head of the Intelligence and Security Affairs Office, Mr. Khalil Muftah.

Kufra International Airport had received its first Libyan Airlines flight from Tripoli on the 5 July, after a nine year suspension of flights.

It is not clear if Salini will actually commence the project in August in view of the current security situation in Libya. The company did not provide any further information. [/restrict]
