Tripoli, 18 May, 2013:
Benghazi police have said that 14 people are being treated for food poisoning after eating . . .[restrict]in a local restaurant and that eight foreigners have been arrested, including one who supplied the eatery with chicken and lamb.
Imad Al-Msheeti , the investigating officer from the Al-fweihat police station told the Libya Herald this evening: “We have arrested eight people, including a Syrian and seven Egyptians. Seven of them were working at the restaurant.”
One of those detained had been supplying the unnamed restaurant with lamb and chicken.”This individual does not have any health certificates or residence or work practice procedures” said Al-Msheeti .
No information was available this evening on the condition of those who had been struck down with food poisoning as a result of eating at the establishment. However this is only the latest in a series of incidents that has raised questions over the effectiveness of public health inspectors, not only in Benghazi, in cracking down on poor hygiene, dubious raw materials and inadequate food preparation in catering outlets throughout the country.
