The Libyan Association for Relief and Aid is helping over a thousand illegal immigrants held at Benghazi’s illegal immigrants’ detention center.  . . .[restrict]The 1,217 refugees come from Somalia, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Chad, Sudan. They were caught entering Libya without visas or authorization by Libyan authorities,  Some of them have travel documents; others do not. The reason for their crossing Libya was to travel on to Europe across the Mediterranean Sea.

The association reports that after initially their humanitarian needs at the detention center at Ghanfuda, Benghazi, it provided them with food and 600 blankets.

The association said that it had contacted the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, to find a resolution to the situation the refugees held at the detention center.

In January, officials from UNHCR’s Middle East and North Africa section visited the detention center and promised to coordinate with Libyan authorities in order to find a solution.

As at January, the UNHCR’s Middle East and North Africa section estimated that there were some 8,000 foreign refugees in Libya.
