Tripoli, 16 October:

Libya and Tunisia are to set up special centres at the two border crossings, at Ras Jedir and Dahiba, . . .[restrict]to process the movement of live animals and animal products.

The Director of Information at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Kamal Benaissa, Tuesday, said there veterinary facilities would be made available that conformed to international standards.

The centres would be opening soon, he said.

It is not thought they will be ready in time to deal with imports of Tunisian sheep for Eid.  In fact, large numbers of there are unlikely ever to go near any official livestock centres. According to Tunisian estimates, 150,000 sheep are smuggled into Libya annually. [/restrict]
