The National Oil Corporation (NOC) and Italy’s Eni North Africa announced yesterday the successful drilling of a new gas discovery in offshore Block D (Contract D).
The NOC and Eni North Africa, the operator of Contract 4/16, have successfully completed drilling the exploration well (J1-4/16), resulting in a new gas discovery in the offshore area of western Libya, approximately 95 kilometres from the Libyan coast.
Drilling was completed to a final depth of 10,458 feet. Tests of the Metlawi reservoir showed flow rates distributed across two tests: the first at 14 million cubic feet per second (MMcf/mm³) in a 32/64-inch choke, and the second at 24 MMcf/mm³ in a 62/64-inch choke.
The NOC announced that this well is the final well in fulfilling the nine contractual obligations for offshore Contract Block D, as stipulated in the agreement signed in June 2008.
Eni’s new discovery follows on from the NOC’s announcement on the same day of a new discovery by Algeria’s Sonatrach and a separate announcement of a new discovery by Spain’s Repsol / REMSA.
