The Attorney General’s Office confirmed in the early hours of Wednesday 4 February the death of Saif al-Islam Qaddafi, son of the former Libya dictator of Muamar Qaddafi. The Attorney General’s complete statement read:

‘‘Following the receipt of a report about the death of citizen Saif al-Islam Muammar Qaddafi, the investigators implemented the decision of the Attorney General, which authorized them to gather information, go to the locations, conduct an inspection, seize items, appoint experts, and hear witnesses and anyone from whom clarifications could be obtained regarding the incident under preliminary investigation.

The investigation team, accompanied by forensic doctors and experts (weapons, fingerprints, toxins, and various fields of science related to the investigation), went on a visit on Tuesday, 3 February, 2026, and examined the body of the deceased.

The examination resulted in proving that the victim had been subjected to gunshot wounds that caused his death. The investigation team then began searching for and investigating the evidence of the case, identifying the circle of suspects in committing the crime, and signing the procedures that require the filing of the public prosecution against them’’.
