Zliten Chamber of Commerce announced its opposition to the House of Representatives’ (HoR – parliament) proposal to impose a tax on certain goods. This came at an expanded meeting held last Saturday (24 January) at the Chamber’s Zliten headquarters.

Attendees included the Chamber’s Chairman, Jalal Bani; the Zliten Municipal Council Member responsible for Economic and Investment Affairs; the Chairman of the General Assembly of Zliten Chamber; members of the Chambers’ Board; and a number of Chamber members, including owners of companies and factories, as well as owners of individual and service-oriented businesses within the municipality.

In its opposition to the goods tax, the meeting expressed their concern about the repercussions of this proposal, emphasizing that imposing such taxes would directly impact citizens’ lives through increased prices for goods and services, especially those on lower incomes. They argued that there was not adequate prior consultation about the tax proposal and also argued that it would hinder local economic development and support for commercial and productive activities.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the attendees agreed on the necessity of reconsidering this proposal, stressing the importance of considering the economic and living conditions of citizens and supporting the business environment in a way that contributes to achieving economic stability and sustainable development within the municipality.
