In a joint statement released today, the embassies of France, Germany, Italy, the UK and US welcomed the High National Elections Commission’s (HNEC) announcement of municipal elections results in 58 municipalities across Libya.

‘‘We commend the High National Elections Commission for the successful management of this democratic process, and recognise the important roles played by the Libyan authorities, civil society, and all actors involved in ensuring the security of electoral operations across the country.

We also pay tribute to the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the United Nations Development Programme for their support throughout.

The newly elected municipal leaders have a mandate from the Libyan people. We call on the relevant authorities to support the delivery of their work to serve the best interests of the Libyan people.

The P3+2 reiterate the need to seize this positive momentum and progress to the second round of elections, which the High National Elections Commission plan to Initiate in January. We call on the authorities to play their part by allocating the necessary funds and securing electoral operations.
