Libya’s Tripoli based Ministry of Labour and Rehabilitation announced Saturday that it is organising a conference for Labour Ministers from the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD). The event will be held under the slogan ‘‘Safe Mediterranean, Stable South’’ from 27 to 28 November in the capital, Tripoli.

The Ministry of Labour said this comes within the framework of its government’s interest in developing the (foreign, migrant) labour system and creating opportunities to enhance investment and stability.

To regulate the labour market
The conference, it added, comes within the Ministry’s efforts to regulate the (foreign/migrant) labour market by settling the conditions of expatriate workers and restricting them, and developing an administrative and organisational structure that opens the way for investment and development.

Targeting upstream countries that export labour
The Ministry noted the importance of the role of international institutions in active participation through this conference to support stability and development efforts targeting upstream countries that export (illegal migrant) labour.

Establishing database to develop action plan
It added that, with the support of its government, it looks forward to establishing a database that will ensure the development of an action plan to enhance cooperation between the Sahel and Sahara countries and establish ways of peace and security in the region. All of this, it concluded, will have a positive impact on the countries of the Mediterranean Basin, while emphasizing the Libyan government’s refusal to resettle any expatriate in the country.
