The Libyan Centre for Solar Energy Research and Studies (LCSERS) made a presentation last Sunday proposing to establish energy dams in Libya to generate hydroelectric energy.

The presentation was made during a preparatory meeting chaired by Mahmoud Al-Futaisi, Director General of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), at the NESDB’s Tripoli headquarters, and Faisal Al-Abdali, Director of the Libyan Authority for Scientific Research, and in the presence of stakeholders from the Renewable Energies, Urban Planning, Economics and Industry Authority.

The meeting concluded with a set of recommendations, the most important of which was an agreement to organize a joint workshop to discuss policies and strategies related to natural disaster management. The main objectives of the workshop were to enhance cooperation and coordination among relevant parties, and to develop the necessary plans and procedures for this file’s efficient and effective management.

Youssef Al-Naas, Director General of the Center, was also appointed as chair of the preparatory committee for the workshop.

Storm Daniel Derna disaster and the collapsed dams
The meeting comes on the back of the Storm Daniel disaster that hit eastern Libya and Derna particularly, causing huge damage, injury and death after two of the city’s dams collapsed.

The disaster has woken the Libyan authorities to the existence of several dams in Libya and the realisation that with the possibility of increased rain due to climate change, they can be invested in to produce energy.
