The spokesman for the Benghazi Sea Port Administration, Muftah Al-Shuaibi, told Libya Herald, citing the Director of the Port’s Handling Office, that the movement of ships in Benghazi Port is increasing day by day, and the number of ships docking has increased in August.
Unprecedented traffic
He stressed that there is an unprecedented increase in ships arriving at the port, and that the number of ships that have docked at the Jiliana Free Zone pier has reached 51 ships loaded with various types of goods and commodities coming to Libya from all over the world.
Record loading and unloading
Al-Shuaibi said Benghazi Port can accommodate trade coming to Libya, especially to the city of Benghazi and its surrounding cities, thanks to qualified human cadres that conduct the handling and unloading operations in record time. This, he lamented, despite some obstacles such as a lack of some equipment.
He said 27 container ships, 13 grain ships, 4 ships loaded with cars, 4 ships loaded with equipment and spare parts and 3 ships loaded with bulk cement had docked in August alone.
Benghazi port working around the clock
Benghazi port, Al-Shuaibi continued, has adopted a work mechanism so that the work of handling, storing, and delivering goods to their owners does not stop, in addition to the capacity of the port to load ships with materials and goods exported abroad.
Benghazi port has a development plan
Al-Shuaibi highlighted the port’s plan to develop and modernise its infrastructure, which includes the expansion and maintenance of regular container and refrigerated yards, the maintenance of grain silos, the modernization of handling machines and equipment on the port’s docks, with comprehensive maintenance of the various service facilities. This he added, was in order to make Benghazi port capable of facing the expansion of incoming and outgoing trade during the coming years.
