Three Libyan olive oil producing companies won awards at the Japan Olive Oil Prize 2023 (JOOP) international competition among several participants from 23 olive oil-producing countries.

Multi-international award-winning company based in the Western /Nefusa Mountain city of Gharian, Al-Moshkat Company, won a gold medal, while Aryaf Company and Al-Bustan Company won silver medals – all in the monovarietal categories.

Help from Italian Chamber of Commerce in Japan
Commenting exclusively to Libya Herald on the event, General Manager of Al-Moshkat Company, Jalal Al-Lamushi, said his company’s participation in the Joop 2023 competition was supervised by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Japan, which facilitated quick access to it, access to its conditions and standards, and registration in the specified time.

He highlighted previous participations in olive oil competitions in Japan in which specialized Libyan companies won advanced ranks among several international competitors in the quality of olive oil.

High quality Libyan oil has won several international competitions
Al-Lamushi explained that Libyan olive oil is one of the best types of olive oil according to the approved international quality standards. It meets the requirements and conditions that enable it to win gold medals and achieve advanced ranks in all international competitions organized in many countries of the world. Libyan companies producing olive oil, he reminded, have won the first ranks in Greece, France, Germany, Turkey, Italy and Belgium over the past years.

Al-Moshkat has won 13 prizes
Al-Lamushi confirmed that his company won 13 prizes in the past year from competitions in Italy, Japan, Greece, Qatar, Turkey and Belgium, noting that it will participate in competitions for the best types of olive oil this year in Greece, Italy, America and Switzerland.

No support from Libyan governments!
Regarding support from Libyan governments in participation in international olive oil competitions, Al-Lamushi denied the existence of any support in any form from Libyan governments. This includes the Ministry of Economy and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture, or even through other economic institutions. He said the only support they received was moral support from the Libyan Export Promotion Centre (LEPC) in the first international participation of Libyan companies and after that the LEPC did not make any significant effort to encourage Libyan companies producing olive oil to participate again in any competition outside Libya.
