UNSMIL: Warring parties invited to begin negotiations on 29 September

The UN’s Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Raisedon Zenenga, attended a workshop today organized by the Joint Operations Centre on “State Monopoly on Weapons in Libya”.

Zenenga highlighted the challenges posed to the safety and security of Libyans and efforts to unify Libyan security institutions due to the proliferation of weapons in the country and their possession by government agencies and other unofficial parties.

The Deputy Special Representative stressed the need to take gradual steps to place weapons under the authority and responsibility of the Libyan state, which alone has the right to determine how to use it in a legitimate and accountable manner with the aim of providing security for Libyans under the rule of law.

Zenenga also reaffirmed UNSMIL’s continued support for Libyan-led efforts in the areas of reform of security sector reform (SSR), disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR), withdrawal of foreign forces, foreign fighters and mercenaries, and collection and disposal of remnants of war and unexploded ordnance.
