Italy will treat more than 35 critical muscular dystrophy patients in Italy and help treat others locally.

The news came on Wednesday during the meeting at the Cabinet Office in Tripoli between Libya’s Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Health Minister, Ramadan Abujanah and Italian ambassador Giuseppe Buccino.

The health ministry reported that the two discussed prospects for cooperation between the two countries, especially in the health sector.

It reported that the two sides discussed all the obstacles facing muscular dystrophy patients, and the possibility of their treatment in Italy.

The Minister of Health and the Italian ambassador agreed to send more than 35 patients in critical cases, after they were evaluated by a specialized Italian team that will visit Libya to filter cases, between transferring them to Italy or submitting a plan to treat them locally.

It reported that the Italian ambassador stressed the possibility of sending several Libyan doctors to Italy to gain experience in treating dystrophic patients, pledging to provide all facilities for doctors and patients, including obtaining travel visas.

For his part, Abujanah affirmed that all health capabilities are heading in the context of resolving the file of treating patients with atrophy, pointing to Italy’s provision of two million dollars to support the health sector in Libya.

On Tuesday, Abujanah received a number of muscular dystrophy patients, and listened to their demands regarding their right to obtain treatment abroad at the expense of the state, expressing his hope that all patients would obtain their natural right to decent medical services, the Ministry reported.
