The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) reported Wednesday that the first unit at the Tobruk fast track power station joined the public electricity network for the first time as part of its operational tests.
The fast-track power stations were speeded through the bureaucratic process by incumbent caretaker prime minister Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba in order to prevent lengthy power cuts this summer. They were not ready, as promised by Aldabaiba, before the peak demand summer season.
The resultant power cuts led to violent demonstrations and the sacking of the GECOL board and chairman.
