Germany’s GIZ signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with eight eastern Libyan cities last Saturday.
Mayors and council members of eight cities in Eastern Libya, a representative of the Libyan House of Representatives Idris Omran, the German Ambassador to Libya Oliver Owcza, and representatives of GIZ officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Tobruk.
GIZ said the MoU aims to promote decentralisation and economic development as well as strengthening health services in Eastern Libya.
Sandra Goffin, Head of Operations at the EU Delegation to Libya, joined the event with a video message expressing the EU’s firm support to the project.
The event celebrated the expansion of the joint efforts of the EU and Germany’s BMZ to Libya’s East.
GIZ said it now implements projects to support decentralization and basic services of the municipalities, to promote youth and civil society on behalf of the EU and BMZ, and in cooperation with the Libyan Ministry of Local Government and 25 Libyan partner municipalities.
In addition, it said it improves basic health care services and economic development in order to contribute to Libya’s stabilisation.
It reported that it will soon start work in the municipalities of Ajdabiya, Al-Baida, Benghazi, Brega, Jakharrah, Jalu, Shahat and Tobruk.
