London, 12 March 2020:

Fathi Bashagha, Interior Minister for Libya’s internationally recognized Tripoli government said he was looking for a greater UK role in establishing stability and development as well as a free future for all Libyans. He was speaking to a group of British parliamentarians during his London visit yesterday.

Bashagha confirmed that his government defends Libya in general and the capital Tripoli, in particular, for the sake of a civil and democratic state that guarantees human rights and the rule of law. He said his government has sacrificed and continues to sacrifice martyrs to defeat the aggression launched by Khalifa Haftar, commander of the mainly eastern based Libyan National Army (LNA), and his militias on the capital Tripoli.

Bashagha also praised the role played by the United Kingdom in supporting his government in its fight against the terrorist organization ISIS in Sirte in 2016 and the liberation of the city, expressing his government’s desire to maintain joint security cooperation and coordination between the two.

He also stressed the need to strengthen bilateral relations between Libya and the United Kingdom, especially in the fields of security and trade, in the interest sought by the two friendly countries, and to look forward to a greater role for Libya’s allies, the United Kingdom, in building and stability and to ensure a free future for all Libyans.
