Leaders of the Tebu community and the Zway tribe in Kufra signed an agreement on Tuesday that it is . . .[restrict]hoped will end the communal violence that has plagued the town and region since February.
Under the agreement, brokered by elders from Sebha, Ajdabiya, Benghazi and elsewhere in Libya, the two groups agreed that anyone who was involved in violence or attacked anybody would be handed over by his community to the army.
Elders from both communities are to meet after Eid in order to iron out the practicalities of the present truce and turn it into a lasting ceasefire.
The truce between the two sides is more or less holding after the Libya Shield Battalion was removed and re-deployed in Benghazi and replaced by the regular army — one of the key demands of the Tebus.
According to Tebu sources, there was an altercation yesterday in the town when a Tebu person who had gone to the market was reportedly attacked by a Zway man. So far the alleged attacker has not been handed over but it is reported that Zway leaders say they know his identity and have promised to deliver him to the army.
