Tunis, 27 October 2017:
The Beida-based interim prime minister has promised that his government will provide all the requirements needed by the various security forces in the south of Libya in order for them to defend the region and the border, and ensure they remain under the eastern government’s authority.
He made the promise yesterday to Major-General Mohamed Ben Nayel, the head of Libyan National Army’s 12th Brigade and also commander of the LNA’s Rada (“deterrence) forces for central and southern Libya.
The meeting, which was also attended by Senussi Saleh Senussi, the head of the council on ministers in the south, had been set up to look into the needs of the 12th Brigade and specifically into protecting the southern borders.
Given the Thinni government’s severe financial constraints it is not clear how he will deliver on his promise.
Thinni later visited the head of the House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, at his home in Guba to assess both the current political situation and the state of public services in those parts of the country supposedly under the Beida government’s control.
