Tunis, 9 October 2017:

The Turkish president’s special representative to Libya has had talks today with Presidency Council (PC) head Faiez Serraj about Turkish political support and continuing economic cooperation.

Reiterating President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s backing for the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA), the PC and its government of national accord, Emrullah Isler said that Turkey fully supported the new action plan of UN special envoy Ghassan Salamé to amend the LPA and so ensure that it was acceptable to the House of Representatives for approval.

He also said that Turkey wanted to continue with existing unfinished contracts in Libya and work on new ones.

Indicating that it would, Serraj expressed his praise for Turkish firms saying they well understood the Libyan market. He was particularly fulsome in his praise for Turkish construction company ENKA which returned to Obari earlier this year to complete the new 640-MW power station there. Ten days ago, it was announced that start-up tests had begun on the plant’s fourth and final turbine.

Today’s meeting comes at a time the Turkish government is looking to boost business abroad.

It is not clear if the two men discussed the hundreds of arrest warrants issued by the attorney general against those suspected of involvement in terrorist activities.  A number are said to now be in Turkey.
