Tunis, 24 August 2017:

UNSMIL envoy Ghassan Salame sought to glean a more complete picture of Libyan political and financial problems after travelling to Tripoli yesterday to speak with a host of different Libyan officials spread over several meetings. He particularly focused on the fiscal challenges currently facing Libya.

“Working towards strong and unified financial institutions is a top priority to ensure Libyan financial resources benefit all Libyans”, .

Salamé begun the day by meeting with Presidency Council (PC) finance minister Osama Hamad Saleh to assess the current state of the Libyan economy. Following that, he met with the Tripoli-based Central Bank of Libya (CBL) governor Saddek Elkaber.

The UNSMIL envoy then met with the head of the Libyan Audit Bureau, Khaled Shakshak, to discuss the audit system after which he had discussions with Libya’s Investment Authority.

He also spoke to former prime minister Ali Zeidan, expressing his relief that Zeidan had been released from captivity and was in good health.

This was Salamé’s second visit to Tripoli since taking over as UN special envoy at the beginning of the month. He has also been to Beida, Guba, Benghazi and Misrata where he met HoR President Ageela Saleh and LNA commander Khalifa Hafter as well a various academics, students, writers and local officials.

He is due to visit the south but this has been delayed.

“The trip to the south has been postponed solely due to technical issues,” an UNSMIL source told the Libya Herald. “It has no political reason whatsoever. We look forward to going to the south once these technical issues are sorted”.
