The Presidency Council (PC) is to give LD 10 million to the rebuilding of Sirte University and four schools in the town damaged during the fighting to oust the so-called Islamic State (IS) from the area last year.
PC deputy Ahmed Maetig agreed the deal at a Tripoli meeting with Minister of Education Osman Abdul Al-Jalil, local government minister Bidad Gansu and the mayor of Sirte, Mukhtar Al-Madani.
They also reviewed a number of policies to bolster the education system in Sirte. A PC delegation will visit the town to fully understand the full needs of the town in the education sector, it was announced.
Also mentioned was the fact that Sirte never fully recovered from the 2011 revolution. Sirte University has also received the support of the EU as the town starts to get back on its feet.
The Maetig-hosted talks also looked at efforts to rebuild the airport and port in Sirte, as well as damaged roads and bridges. Unexploded ordinance remains a problem in the town and Gardabiya airport, which serves both as a civil and military facility was particularly hard-hit by last year’s fighting.
The news came as judicial officials in Sirte discussed the issues facing the town’s legal system. The main court was also damaged in the fighting and IS looted and smashed up its premises.
The officials called on the PC-back Ministry of Justice to help in the efforts to re-activate legal services in Sirte.
On the downside, there was a fire yesterday at the second turbine unit in the Khaleej (Gulf) Power Station 25 kilometres west of the town. The cause was an explosion inside one of transformers. Said to be caused by technical issues, it was extinguished by a group of locals and fire fighters.
