Tripoli and the Jebel Nafusa have again been hit by flooding following heavy rains only weeks after a similar massive downpour affected western Libya.
Ineffective drainage systems in the capital have caused the flooding. Ironically, making matters worse, it came as the water supply to the capital was disrupted because of electrical problems at the Hasawna water fields near Sebha which shut down the pumps. The Man-Made River authority said that the disruption had begun yesterday. According to one source the power was affected by a sandstorm.
Flooding was particularly intense at the Al-Bifi traffic lights on the highway near Tajoura. Cars and even trucks became stuck. As a result, Civil Defence asked people to avoid the highway and the area near the Al-Bifi traffic lights. In response the the situation, the education ministry announced that schools throughout the capital, from Tajoura to Janzour and south to Ain Zara, would be closed on Tuesday.
In January, Tripoli saw as much as 30 centimetres of water on its roads during flooding brought on by a particularly bad stretch of weather. So dire was the disruption that schools were closed for three days.
