Tunis, 4 January 2017:

House of Representatives president Ageela Saleh has insisted that Libya will work with all its neighbours in the the search for peace but wants the primacy of his elected parliament recognised .

In Tunis after a meeting with his Tunisian opposite number Mohamed Ennaceur, Saleh said: “We have come to seek support for the legitimacy stemming from the polls. We want to follow the path of dialogue and political consensus and we refuse everything that opposes the interest of the country.”

He also averred that Libya would deal with all parties provided its dignity, territorial unity and independence were protected.

Saleh welcomed the initiative by Tunisia and Algeria to hold a meeting of the foreign ministers of all Libya’s neighbours and their attempt to broker a peaceful settlement,.

Indeed, Algeria had slated today for a meeting of all Libyan rivals in its capital in an effort to hammer out a settlement on the basis of the Libyan Political Agreement which it continues to insist that it backs.  In the last month Algeria’s Maghreb, African and Arab affairs, Abdelkader Messahel has had individual meetings with Presidency Council chairman Faizez Serraj, Ageela Saleh and Khalifa Hafter.

In the event, the planned encounter has been postponed. Instead Messahel greeted State Council president Abdulrahman Sewehli at the head of a SC delegation which has been invited for a two day visit. No details have so far emerged from the talks.

Tomorrow Saleh is expected to meet Tunisian president Beji Caid Essebsi and foreign minister Khemaies  Jhinaoui. Essebsi has spoken of trilateral meeting with Egypt and Algeria ahead of a Libyn summit. The HoR president is also expected to meet UNSMIL chief Martin Kobler.
