The First Support Battalion of the Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG) confirmed yesterday that it had officially documented the ‘‘crash’’ of a camera drone in the small hours of yesterday into a fuel tank at Zawia Oil Refinery.
The PFG is the security entity charged with protecting Libya's oil and gas facilities across the country.
The First Support Battalion said the drone used was an FPV (First-Person View) type-drone. It said its media department had recorded the damage sustained by the oil tank as well as the drone's crash site and wreckage. The aim of this is to visually document the event and show the aftermath exactly as it appears on the ground.
This documentation, it continued, is part of media efforts to report events professionally and objectively, highlighting the extent of the damage to the oil facility while emphasizing the need to complete technical and investigative procedures to determine the circumstances of the incident and the parties responsible.
The First Support Battalion condemned the attack in the strongest and most forceful terms. The Battalion affirmed that targeting these vital facilities constitutes a serious criminal act and a blatant assault on the state’s resources and national wealth, as well as a direct threat to the security and safety of the personnel working at these facilities.
It added that oil facilities represent a fundamental lifeline of the national economy. Any attempt to target them or compromise their security and safety is a serious and categorically unacceptable violation. Such an act cannot be treated as an isolated incident, given the grave risks it poses to the security, economy, and stability of the nation.
The First Support Battalion affirmed that any attempt to harm oil facilities or endanger their personnel is a matter that will not be taken lightly. Protecting and securing these facilities is a national and security responsibility that allows no negligence or failure. The Battalion will continue to carry out its duties with vigilance, discipline, and firmness, in accordance with the law and the instructions issued by the competent authorities.
The Battalion also affirmed its full support for all security and legal measures aimed at uncovering the circumstances surrounding these attacks, identifying those responsible, and referring them to the competent authorities to take the necessary legal measures against them. It further supports efforts to prevent the recurrence of such acts that threaten the security and stability of the country.
It warned that the continued targeting of oil facilities or their personnel would endanger the lives of innocent people and harm the interests of the Libyan people and their national resources. This requires the highest degree of responsibility and vigilance, as well as serious and firm action by the competent authorities.
The First Support Battalion concluded that it would remain committed to fulfilling its national duty, protecting the facilities entrusted to it, safeguarding the nation’s resources, and carrying out its responsibilities without negligence or failure.
