Brega Petroleum Marketing Company announced within the last few minutes that a fire, emitting heavy smoke, has broken out in diesel tank No. 402 at its Zawia Oil Depot.
The incident occurred under circumstances that remain unknown at this time, Brega said.
Firefighting, safety, and emergency teams have begun tackling the blaze in accordance with approved response plans, while simultaneously cooling adjacent tanks to prevent the fire from spreading. Monitoring of the situation and damage assessment are ongoing, and further updates will be announced as soon as confirmed information becomes available.
The company reiterates its urgent appeal to all parties to cease hostilities and stay away from oil facilities and depots. These sites contain highly flammable materials, and targeting or approaching them poses grave risks to the lives of citizens, workers, and the surrounding area, in addition to jeopardizing the continuity of fuel supplies.
Oil facilities are vital assets belonging to all Libyans; protecting them is a national responsibility that allows for no negligence, Brega added.
As Brega Marketing stated, it is unclear what the cause of the fire is.
However, over the last three days a drone has hit a diesel tank and another hit the Water Desalination Plant in Zawia.
