The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Housing and Construction, Abu Bakr Oweidat, held a technical meeting at the Ministry's Tripoli headquarters yesterday with a delegation from the multinational French company, SUEZ.

SUEZ is a global leader in the management and development of water, sanitation, and infrastructure projects.

The Ministry said the meeting comes as part of its policy to strengthen international cooperation and solidify strategic partnerships with major global specialized institutions and companies to support national efforts in reconstruction and infrastructure development.

It said this engagement reflects the coordination of national efforts with global expertise to devise scientific and practical solutions for the challenges facing Libya’s water and sanitation sectors.

The meeting featured extensive discussions on establishing an effective institutional partnership with SUEZ and leveraging its extensive expertise and international experience in planning, design, implementation, operations, and asset management. These efforts aim to enhance the efficiency of water and sanitation systems and elevate the quality of essential services in accordance with the latest global engineering standards and practices.

The two sides also discussed the implementation mechanisms required to establish a joint strategic vision for developing and maintaining water and sewage networks across Libyan cities and regions. This initiative aims to align with sustainable development requirements and lay the groundwork for a new phase of technical cooperation—one grounded in the exchange of expertise, knowledge transfer, the localization of modern technologies, and national capacity building.

The Ministry’s Undersecretary affirmed that the Ministry is pressing ahead with its vision of engaging with leading international institutions and attracting highly qualified global expertise. This approach stems from the conviction that strategic partnerships are fundamental to supporting development and reconstruction programmes, as well as accelerating the implementation of vital projects that serve citizens and ensure the sustainability of infrastructure facilities nationwide.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides agreed to continue technical coordination and to begin drafting a framework and joint strategic vision. This process will define cooperation priorities and implementation mechanisms, paving the way for the launch of impactful projects that develop the water and sewage sectors. These efforts will support the state’s objectives under reconstruction programmes and the "Return to Life" initiative, ultimately fostering sustainable urban development, enhancing service quality, and solidifying the foundations of comprehensive development in Libya.

The meeting was attended by the Ministry Undersecretaries for Affected Areas and Reconstruction Affairs, the Director of the Projects Department, the Director of the Research and Studies Department, and the Head of the Ministry’s Southern Region Office. Also participating were a board member of the General Company for Water and Wastewater and the Director of the Water Resources Projects Centre.
