Nicola Orlando, the EU Ambassador to Libya, reported on 28 November that the EU concluded its meetings in Rome with in-depth consultations with representatives of all relevant Libyan institutions on a new, cross-country EU-funded flagship programme building on the work of the Technical Mission on rights-based migration and border management.
Implemented by the Italian Ministry of the Interior and IOM Libya, the initiative will expand support to:
• Strengthen the management of land borders and migratory routes
• Investigate and dismantle transnational human smuggling and trafficking networks
• Assist Libyan communities affected by migration
• Reinforce our long-standing partnership to enhance the capacity, effectiveness and accountability of Libya’s maritime authorities in saving lives at sea.
Orlando said the EU look forward to this new chapter in the EU–Libya partnership for effective, rights-compliant migration and border management.
