The Tripoli-based Libyan Minister of Marine Resources, Adel Sultan, discussed the issue of maintaining and rehabilitating fishing ports and harbours, to meet the needs of fishermen and municipalities and to find out their requirements.
The discussion took place in Tripoli on Monday with members of the Supreme Council of Local Administration, in the presence of the Secretary General of the Council, Nasr Al-Mahtout and the mayors of the coastal municipalities.
The Ministry reported that the discussion also focused on the national project for aquaculture due to its importance to non-coastal regions and municipalities.
Inclusion of councils within ministry’s plans
The discussion, the Ministry explained, comes within the framework of implementing the instructions of the Prime Minister to hold meetings between members of the Supreme Council of Local Administration, ministers and heads of executive agencies, to review the inclusion of municipal needs within the plans of ministries and executive agencies and to address the bottlenecks they face that fall within their competence.
Diversification and job creation
It will be recalled that Libya is looking to diversify its economy away from hydrocarbons and create jobs for its youth in other sectors. The development of a fisheries and aquaculture industry is considered one of the options.
