The Benghazi Benina airport based privately owned Barniq Airways announced today that it is preparing to receive its third aircraft – Airbus A320 (5A-BRC) – within a few days.
It reported that the plane is currently undergoing the process of painting and coating in the bright colours of the Barneq livery, after it was registered, and its ownership transferred to Barniq Airways.
Berniq said it will soon announce new local and international destinations.
Background
It will be recalled that Berniq Airways was established in Benghazi with a capital of LD 200 million by the Bank of Commerce and Development in 2018. The BCD owns 40 percent. The first of its Airbus-A320 (5A-BRA) aircraft arrived at its hub at Benina Benghazi airport in October 2020.
Benina airport’s Berniq Terminal
In May 2022 Benghazi’s Benina airport opened its new Berniq terminal. The terminal is a landmark PPP project in Libya as it is considered by its financers to be the first project completed on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis. The project was financed by the BCD.
Background to the BCD financed BOT project
It will be recalled that the Abdalla Thinni Interim Libyan Government based in eastern Libya had signed an agreement in August 2019 with the BCD, Libya’s first and largest private bank, to finance and construct a passenger terminal at Benina International Airport.
The agreement was a BOT model valid for 25 years, after which the bank returns the airport to the Libyan state.
